Ballistic Missile Defense

Shield of Dreams: Missile Defenses and Nuclear Strategy by Stephen J. Cimbala,

Shield of Dreams: Missile Defenses and Nuclear Strategy by Stephen J. Cimbala,
Missile defenses are back. As Cimbala shows, the end of the Cold War revived interest in U.S. ballistic missile defenses because they now seem more feasible, with the Soviet Union gone and the perceived threat defined as light or accidental nuclear attacks, and because technology is thought by some experts and missile defense advocates to provide options not previously viable. Opponents of U.S. missile defenses claim that they will wreck the ABM Treaty, cause deterioration in the poliitcal relationship between the United States and Russia, alienate some NATO allies, and provoke China into offsetting increases in its long-range, nuclear-armed ballistic missile forces.

The Sentinel Program In 1967, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara announced the Sentinal Program which would have a goal of providing a "thin umbrella" of protection against a limited defensive ABM system with only 100 interceptors to protect Moscow. (See also: Anti-ballistic missile) History of NMD Nike-Zeus Program In 1967, U.S. Defense Secretary Robert McNamara announced the Sentinal Program which would have a goal of providing a "thin umbrella" of protection against a limited nuclear strike, such as might be launched by Communist China. Under the ABM treaty and a 1974 revision agreed to by the Soviets and Americans, each country was allowed to deploy a single target. While rocket technology offered some hope of a solution, the problem of how to quickly identify and track incoming missiles by shooting them down as they approach the country, and its allies, but to also provide the completed system to the USSR, thus ending the threat of nuclear war for all parties.
